Overview
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded not in the cell nucleus but in mitochondrial DNA, within the 12S rRNA gene. It belongs to a small family of mitochondrial-derived peptides discovered in the last decade.
In animal studies MOTS-c activates AMPK, a central energy sensor, and has been linked to improved insulin sensitivity and physical capacity, which is why it is often described as an exercise-mimetic in research.
